Music

Intent

Through its music curriculum, the school aims to ensure that all pupils develop a lifelong appreciation and enjoyment of music. The curriculum is designed to:

Develop an appreciation for music, helping pupils recognise its value in different cultures, contexts and everyday life.

Experience and interact with a wide range of musical genres, broadening their understanding of musical diversity from classical and folk to world music, pop and beyond.

Build skills across key musical concepts, including rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics and notation, enabling pupils to develop increasing confidence and musical independence.

Develop their singing, encouraging pupils to use their voices expressively and to sing with accuracy, control and enjoyment.

Perform in a variety of contexts, giving pupils regular opportunities to share their musical learning with others through both informal classroom performance and whole‑school events.

Implementation

Weekly Music Lessons
Music is taught once a week in every year group, ensuring a consistent and progressive learning journey from Reception to Year 6.

Charanga Programme
The school follows the Charanga Musical School scheme, aligned with the National Curriculum, to provide a structured, engaging and inclusive approach to music learning.

Termly Genre Lessons
Each term includes a dedicated ‘genre’ lesson, giving pupils the chance to explore new musical styles, learn about influential artists and understand the historical and cultural significance of different genres.

Singing Collective Worship
Singing is an important part of school life. Weekly singing collective worship supports vocal development, builds confidence and promotes a shared sense of community.

Performance Opportunities
Every year group takes part in a performance opportunity throughout the year, such as the Christmas Carol Service, class assemblies or the Year 6 End‑of‑Year Show. These events allow pupils to apply their learning in real contexts and celebrate their musical achievements.

Impact

The school’s music curriculum enables pupils to become confident, expressive and knowledgeable young musicians. As a result of the carefully structured teaching and rich range of musical experiences provided, pupils:

Demonstrate a growing appreciation and understanding of music, recognising how it can communicate ideas, emotions and cultural identity. They speak positively about music and show enthusiasm for listening, creating and performing.

Build secure musical skills over time, showing clear progression in key concepts such as rhythm, pitch, tempo and notation. Pupils are increasingly able to apply these skills independently and with accuracy.

Develop confidence in singing, using their voices with control and expression. Regular singing opportunities help pupils develop both technical ability and enjoyment in performing collectively.

Engage with a wide variety of musical genres, broadening their cultural awareness and deepening their understanding of music from different traditions and periods.

Perform with enjoyment and increasing self-assurance, taking part in class performances, collective worship and whole‑school events. These moments allow pupils to showcase their learning, celebrate success and develop pride in their achievements.

Leave the school with a strong foundation in music, ready to continue their musical learning in secondary school with confidence, curiosity and a positive attitude.

Year 3 and 4 Choir

The school choir is a vibrant and enthusiastic group of pupils who share a passion for singing. Meeting regularly to rehearse a wide range of songs, the choir brings the joy of music to the heart of the school community.

The choir performs at events both locally and across Bristol, proudly representing the school at festivals, community celebrations, and special occasions. They have also taken part in Young Voices, giving pupils the memorable opportunity to sing as part of one of the largest school choirs in the world.

The choir continues to grow in confidence and talent, providing pupils with a supportive space to develop their musical skills, build teamwork and enjoy the excitement of performing together.

Individual Music Lessons

Individual music lessons are taught by teachers from Bristol Beacon. Children can learn to play the guitar, piano, voice, ukulele and recorder. We have a piano, ukuleles and recorders which can be used for these lessons on site. If your child would like to learn the guitar, they will need to bring their own.

Cost: Bristol Beacon deals with the finances directly. They offer bursaries so if you are Pupil Premium, a child in care, have an EHCP or are a refugee you may be eligible for free or discounted musical experiences.
