Music
Intent
Through its music curriculum, the school aims to ensure that all pupils develop a lifelong appreciation and enjoyment of music. The curriculum is designed to:
Develop an appreciation for music, helping pupils recognise its value in different cultures, contexts and everyday life.
Experience and interact with a wide range of musical genres, broadening their understanding of musical diversity from classical and folk to world music, pop and beyond.
Build skills across key musical concepts, including rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics and notation, enabling pupils to develop increasing confidence and musical independence.
Develop their singing, encouraging pupils to use their voices expressively and to sing with accuracy, control and enjoyment.
Perform in a variety of contexts, giving pupils regular opportunities to share their musical learning with others through both informal classroom performance and whole‑school events.
Implementation
Weekly Music Lessons
Music is taught once a week in every year group, ensuring a consistent and progressive learning journey from Reception to Year 6.
Charanga Programme
The school follows the Charanga Musical School scheme, aligned with the National Curriculum, to provide a structured, engaging and inclusive approach to music learning.
Termly Genre Lessons
Each term includes a dedicated ‘genre’ lesson, giving pupils the chance to explore new musical styles, learn about influential artists and understand the historical and cultural significance of different genres.
Singing Collective Worship
Singing is an important part of school life. Weekly singing collective worship supports vocal development, builds confidence and promotes a shared sense of community.
Performance Opportunities
Every year group takes part in a performance opportunity throughout the year, such as the Christmas Carol Service, class assemblies or the Year 6 End‑of‑Year Show. These events allow pupils to apply their learning in real contexts and celebrate their musical achievements.
