Enrichment

Enrichment

At Fishponds CE Primary School, we believe that learning extends far beyond the classroom. Alongside our broad and engaging curriculum, we offer a wide range of enrichment opportunities led by trained professionals, giving pupils the chance to discover new interests, build confidence and develop important life skills.

We currently offer African Dance, Karate, BoxFit and Choir. Each activity promotes physical expression, discipline, creativity and teamwork. African Dance celebrates rhythm and culture through movement, Karate supports focus and resilience, and BoxFit provides an energetic approach to fitness and wellbeing. Our choir remains a highlight of school life, with pupils performing locally and across Bristol, including taking part in the Big Sing events, which give them memorable opportunities to shine.

Our much‑loved chickens and guinea pigs also play a special role in enrichment. Caring for them helps pupils develop responsibility, empathy and confidence, while spending time with the animals supports wellbeing and provides moments of calm during the school day. They also spark curiosity in learning, inspiring writing, science and outdoor exploration, and are a valued and joyful part of daily school life.

Together, these opportunities help pupils grow into confident, well‑rounded individuals with a strong sense of curiosity and pride in their achievements. By exploring new activities, working with professionals and caring for our school animals, pupils develop important personal qualities such as resilience, empathy, independence and teamwork. They learn to embrace challenges, celebrate their strengths and recognise the value of contributing to their school community. These experiences enrich their time at Fishponds and support them in becoming thoughtful, motivated learners who are excited about the world around them.

Culture Week

Culture Week is one of the most exciting and cherished events in our school calendar. Each year it brings our community together in a wonderful celebration of the many cultures, languages and traditions that make our school such a vibrant place to learn.

Throughout the week, pupils take part in a wide range of enriching activities, including cultural dance workshops, storytelling sessions, language lessons and opportunities to explore traditional dress from around the world. Cooking experiences allow pupils to discover new flavours and ingredients, while special visitors join us to share their own languages, cultures or religions, offering valuable insights and sparking thoughtful conversation.

The week builds towards the ever‑popular Food Festival, where families, pupils and staff gather to share dishes from across the globe. This event beautifully captures the spirit of Culture Week — a joyful sense of community, curiosity and celebration.

Culture Week continues to be a true highlight of the year, reminding us of the importance of respect, diversity and coming together to learn from one another.

City Of Sanctuary Supporting Organisation

As a proud City of Sanctuary Supporting Organisation, the school is committed to creating a welcoming, inclusive and safe environment for everyone. This means actively fostering a culture of kindness, understanding and respect, particularly for families who have experienced displacement, seeking refuge or starting life anew in the community.

Being part of the City of Sanctuary network reflects the school’s belief that every pupil and family deserves to feel valued and supported. This commitment is woven throughout school life, from curriculum content to pastoral care, from celebration events to community partnerships.

Enrichment Opportunities for Pupils

The school commitment to supporting the City of Sanctuary movement provides pupils with rich learning experiences that deepen empathy, broaden worldviews and celebrate diversity. Examples include:

  • Refugee Week projects exploring themes such as belonging, hope and kindness
  • Storytelling workshops featuring voices and experiences from around the world
  • Links with local community groups supporting sanctuary seekers, giving pupils opportunities to engage in acts of kindness and community service
  • Curriculum enrichment focusing on global citizenship, human rights and understanding migration
  • Creative arts projects such as collaborative murals, poetry, music and drama exploring themes of welcome and identity
  • Pupil‑led campaigns, such as kindness initiatives or awareness events supporting charitable organisations

Through these experiences, pupils learn to be compassionate, informed and active members of a diverse society, living out the school’s values and contributing positively to their community.
