Early Years (Reception)

Intent

At Fishponds CE Primary School, we want every child to discover a love of learning while learning to love themselves and others. We recognise and value each child as an individual and work tirelessly to provide the most appropriate support so that every pupil can access the rich learning opportunities on offer.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage at Fishponds CE Primary School, we aim to ensure that:

  • Children develop a love of learning and of one another. We foster inclusion and ensure that every child is supported through equality of opportunity and anti-discriminatory practice.

  • Children experience a broad and balanced curriculum. Our provision equips pupils with a wide range of knowledge and early “learning to learn” behaviours that prepare them for success throughout school and life.

  • Teaching and learning are of a consistently high quality. We strive for every child to make good progress, ensuring that no learner is left behind.

  • Parents and carers are partners in learning. Strong relationships and open communication help us work together to support each child.

  • Children engage in enriching, meaningful experiences. We believe early school life should be joyful and positive, helping children develop a lifelong love of learning.

  • Our local community plays an active role. We celebrate local traditions, welcome visitors, and create opportunities for children to participate in community events throughout the year.

  • Children develop a strong sense of belonging. Through their time in EYFS, pupils grow in confidence, independence and connection to their school community, ready for a smooth transition into Year 1.

  • Children become confident, reflective learners. They are encouraged to make decisions, evaluate their efforts, make connections and build the foundations of lifelong learning.

  • Children’s interests guide our curriculum. We follow their curiosities and provide opportunities that build, deepen and consolidate knowledge so each child can meet their next steps.

  • Our indoor and outdoor environments inspire learning. We create spaces that support exploration, play and purposeful learning, helping children work towards the Early Learning Goals and make strong progress from their starting points.

Implementation

Our Early Years setting follows the 2021 Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The curriculum is built around seven areas of learning, with the three prime areas forming the foundation for children’s development:

Prime Areas

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development – relationships, self-confidence, managing feelings, caring for ourselves
  • Physical Development – gross and fine motor skills
  • Communication and Language – listening, understanding, speaking

Specific Areas

These are strengthened through the prime areas:

  • Literacy – reading and writing
  • Mathematics – number, shape, space and measure
  • Understanding the World – people and communities, the world, technology
  • Expressive Arts and Design – exploring media and materials

Children’s learning is supported by the Characteristics of Effective Learning:
Play and Exploring, Active Learning and Creating and Thinking Critically.

Personal Development, PSHE and RE

Our curriculum promotes understanding, kindness and respect for all. We teach PSHE, British Values and SMSC to every child, celebrating diversity and challenging attitudes that do not align with our values.

We use the Jigsaw PSHE scheme, which provides strong visual resources to support children, including those with English as an additional language. Jigsaw also includes teaching on positive mental health and resilience.

In RE, children study major world faiths through Discovery RE and develop deeper understanding of Christianity through Understanding Christianity. Learning is enriched through festival celebrations, visits to places of worship and visits from faith representatives.

Teaching and Learning

Each school day includes a balance of adult‑led teaching and child‑led learning.

Adult‑Led Learning

  • Four daily carpet sessions (e.g. phonics, maths, PSED) taught through active, engaging approaches.
  • Small‑group focus tasks based on assessment, enabling children to progress toward their next steps.

Child‑Led Learning (Continuous Provision)

Children learn through play in both indoor and outdoor areas, accessing resources across zones such as:

  • Outdoor: sand, water, physical play, construction, deconstructed role play, stage
  • Indoor: creative space, writing, maths, small world, home corner, construction, fine/gross motor, reading, stories, awe and wonder

Continuous provision is carefully planned to reinforce skills taught in adult‑led sessions (e.g. applying phonics in the construction area).

Planning and Assessment

Staff plan rich, language‑focused experiences based on children’s needs, interests and developmental stages. Planning is informed by ongoing assessment, identifying strengths and gaps.

Skills are broken down into emergent, middle and high levels, ensuring provision is challenging and open‑ended. Adults use planned questions to extend learning and support thinking. Where needed, staff work with external agencies to provide specialist support.

Because many children join us with low language levels, vocabulary and talk are central to our curriculum design.

Learning Environment

Our Early Years environment is purposeful, organised and child‑centred. Resources are clearly labelled, accessible and inviting. Displays are calm, meaningful and celebrate children’s learning. Each area includes key questions to promote curiosity and deeper thinking, supported by warm, positive adult interaction.

Impact

Our Early Years provision ensures that children make strong progress from their individual starting points and are well prepared for the next stage of their education. Assessment is used effectively to identify need, address gaps and shape high‑quality teaching and provision. As a result, children develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that form a secure foundation for future learning.

Children achieve well

Children build firm foundations across all areas of learning. They develop secure early reading, writing and mathematical understanding through carefully sequenced teaching and well-planned opportunities to practise and apply new skills. Children with lower starting points, including those with SEND and those learning English as an additional language, make sustained progress because support is timely, targeted and matched to individual need.

Language and communication are strengthened

Because language development is prioritised throughout the curriculum, children become confident communicators. They use an increasingly rich vocabulary, speak in full sentences and engage positively in conversations with adults and their peers. This strong focus on communication enables children to access all areas of learning more successfully.

Strong personal, social and emotional development

Children develop positive attitudes to learning and demonstrate increasing independence, resilience and cooperation. They learn to manage their emotions, resolve small conflicts and work collaboratively. The emphasis placed on PSHE, British Values and inclusive practice ensures that children feel safe, respected and ready to learn.

Children demonstrate curiosity, independence and sustained engagement

The learning environment and continuous provision promote high levels of engagement. Children explore with purpose, persist with challenges and show pride in what they achieve. They demonstrate the Characteristics of Effective Learning consistently and can talk about what they are doing and why.

A broad, balanced and inclusive curriculum

All children experience a rich and ambitious curriculum. Provision reflects children’s interests, developmental needs and cultural backgrounds, ensuring learning is meaningful and enabling all groups of learners to succeed. Adaptations for children with SEND or specific barriers ensure equality of access and support the closing of attainment gaps.

Children develop respect, understanding and awareness of the wider world

Through well‑planned RE, SMSC and cultural learning, children gain an appreciation of different beliefs, families and communities. They show increasing empathy, celebrate diversity and talk with confidence about similarities and differences.

Children are well prepared for Year 1

By the end of Reception, children are confident, motivated and ready for more formal learning. They demonstrate secure foundations in literacy and mathematics, a strong awareness of themselves as learners and the personal, social and communication skills needed to thrive in Key Stage 1.
