What is Pupil Premium?

Pupil Premium is additional funding provided by the government to help schools improve educational outcomes for children who are considered disadvantaged. This funding is allocated to schools based on the number of pupils who fall into specific groups, including those eligible for free school meals, children who have been in care and children of service families.

The purpose of Pupil Premium is to ensure that all pupils, regardless of their background, have the opportunity to achieve highly. Schools use this funding to remove barriers to learning, provide targeted support and enrich pupils’ school experiences. This may include academic interventions, pastoral support, language development and wider opportunities that build confidence and cultural capital.

At its heart, Pupil Premium aims to bridge the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers, ensuring every child can thrive and succeed.

Pupil Premium Strategy

At Fishponds CE Primary School, the leadership team is committed to ensuring that every pupil, whatever their background, has the opportunity to thrive. The school’s Pupil Premium Strategy sets out a clear and ambitious plan for how funding is used to remove barriers to learning, promote equity and raise outcomes for disadvantaged pupils.

The strategy recognises the unique and richly diverse context of Fishponds CE Primary, where a large proportion of pupils come from disadvantaged backgrounds, speak English as an additional language, or have identified SEND needs. With 40% of pupils eligible for Pupil Premium funding, the school places great emphasis on understanding pupils’ experiences, needs and strengths in order to provide targeted and meaningful support.

The overarching aim of the strategy is to ensure that disadvantaged pupils gain the knowledge, skills and cultural capital needed to succeed in the next stage of their education and beyond. This is achieved through three key strands:

  • Ensuring excellent teaching for all, supported by high‑quality training and evidence‑based practice
  • Providing targeted academic interventions, including specialist reading support, small‑group tuition and language development
  • Offering wider pastoral and enrichment opportunities that develop confidence, resilience and wellbeing

Staff aspire to create an environment where all pupils feel represented, included and empowered to achieve. Through close partnership with families, a rich curriculum and a strong sense of community, Fishponds CE Primary aims to provide every child with the foundations they need to flourish.
