Implementation of British Values
At Fishponds CE Primary School, British values are embedded throughout daily school life. They are taught, modelled and reinforced in meaningful, age‑appropriate ways to help pupils understand their role within the school community and wider society.
Democracy
Democracy is an important part of life at Fishponds CE Primary School. Pupils are encouraged to share their ideas, and adults listen and respond to their views. They also learn to listen respectfully to others, recognising everyone’s right to be heard.
Children have regular opportunities to express their views through the School Council, Circle Time, PSHE lessons and pupil voice questionnaires. School Council and Collective Worship Group representatives are elected by pupils, mirroring the British electoral system and showing democracy in action within our school.
The Rule of Law
The importance of rules and laws—whether in the classroom, the school or the country—is reinforced consistently. Our three school rules are central to daily routines and help create a calm, safe and supportive learning environment.
Pupils learn why rules exist, how they protect us and why everyone shares responsibility for following them. They also explore the consequences of breaking rules, helping them understand fairness, responsibility and accountability.
Individual Liberty
Pupils are encouraged to make positive choices and take responsibility for their actions within a safe and nurturing environment. With clear boundaries and strong pastoral support, children develop confidence in their own decision‑making.
Through PSHE and online safety lessons, pupils learn about their rights and personal freedoms and how to exercise them safely. Whether choosing a level of challenge, deciding how to present their work or selecting extra‑curricular clubs, they are given meaningful opportunities to make independent choices.
Mutual Respect
Respect is a core value at Fishponds CE Primary School and underpins all aspects of school life. Chosen by the whole school community, it shapes how we learn, play and interact with one another.
Pupils understand that everyone deserves respect, regardless of similarities or differences. This expectation is woven through our curriculum, our behaviour approach and our school ethos, helping to create a positive and inclusive environment for all.
Tolerance of Those With Different Faiths and Beliefs
As a diverse inner‑city school, we celebrate the many faiths, beliefs and cultural backgrounds represented in our community. Our core value of Respect supports pupils in developing acceptance, understanding and appreciation of others.
Through RE, PSHE, cultural celebrations (including Diwali and Eid), themed weeks and visits from people of different faiths, children learn about a wide variety of traditions and beliefs. These experiences deepen their understanding of the world and help them appreciate the richness of a multicultural society.
