About Our School
Fishponds Church of England Primary School is a large, vibrant and welcoming inner‑city school in the heart of Bristol. As a rich and diverse community, the school embraces a wide range of religions, cultures and languages. This diversity strengthens and enriches its inclusive ethos, where children and families of all faiths - and none - are welcomed equally.
The school also benefits from a dedicated Resource Base, providing specialist support for pupils with identified additional needs. The Resource Base offers tailored teaching, targeted interventions and a nurturing environment, enabling pupils to access the curriculum in a way that meets their individual learning profiles. Pupils in the Resource Base are valued members of the wider school community and take part in school life as fully as possible, with provision designed to help them flourish both academically and socially.
Fishponds sits within a thriving local community, surrounded by independent shops, cafés and businesses. Just a short walk away are Snuff Mills and Oldbury Court Park, beautiful green spaces that the school makes full use of to enhance learning experiences. Bristol’s bustling city centre, with its historic landmarks, art galleries and attractions, is also close by. Fishponds Church of England Primary School enjoys strong connections with local secondary schools and particularly values its close relationship with the parishes of St Mary’s and All Saints.
The school was established in September 2000 through the amalgamation of two former Church of England schools, with extensions added to support its growing community. In September 2012, it became one of the first Voluntary Aided Primary Schools in the country to convert to academy status, changing its name from St Matthias and Dr Bell’s CE VA Primary School to Fishponds Church of England Academy.
In January 2025, following the closure of the Diocese of Bristol Academies Trust, the school joined the Lighthouse Schools Partnership (LSP), alongside Easton CE Primary School and St Mary Redcliffe Primary School.
Facilities
Our facilities include two multi‑purpose halls and mobile suites of laptops and iPads, allowing flexible whole‑class learning across the school. With full wireless access throughout the site, pupils can learn both indoors and outdoors. Classrooms are equipped with interactive Clevertouch screens, audio‑visual resources and additional laptops to enhance teaching and learning.
We are fortunate to have expansive grounds, including a large field and an Exploration Zone with natural play areas, nature spaces for bug‑hunting, shaded tree areas and large playgrounds for basketball, football, cricket and climbing.
Our Reception classes also enjoy a fantastic outdoor learning environment with zoned areas for water play, construction, wheels, performance, creativity and exploring nature. Pupils might be found busy in the mud kitchen, searching for insects or tending to growing vegetables — learning through play in a rich and stimulating space.
